It's the Saturday before Thanksgiving. How are we feeling? Excited? Anxious? Ambivalent? Hungry? All of the above? Wherever you fall on that spectrum, know that we have your back. We can help you plan what you're going to make, answer your last-minute questions and offer you a friendly word of encouragement. (As they say, my DMs are open!) So let's do this. If you're still waffling on the food, have we got the tool for you. Our brand-new holiday menu planner lets you search the best of the best of our Thanksgiving recipes. Tell us how many people are coming, and we'll suggest how many dishes to make. Have specific dietary needs? You can filter by those as well. Or simply browse our recipes by category, including turkey and desserts and everything in between. When you've picked your favorites, you can save them in the planner and pull up a handy (printable) grocery list. Now how about those burning day-before questions? Aaron Hutcherson and I, along with a few special Food staff guests, will be hosting our live chat Wednesday at noon — except super-size. We'll be online for 90 minutes to help you solve any conundrums, settle those perpetual family food disputes (happens more often than you might think) and make it an all-around stress-free, tasty Thanksgiving. Consider us your personal food professional hotline! Submit your questions now, if you have them, then come back next Wednesday for the full conversation. (And, if you're a print subscriber, don't miss your special Sunday Food section tomorrow.) One of the questions we always get is what to do with holiday leftovers, especially turkey. This year, Aaron has you covered. His Leftover Turkey Chili combines the meat (white, dark or both) with frozen green beans (use surplus fresh if you have them, or any other vegetable you want), a can of white beans and a can of green chiles. It's hearty and bold, and will make you look forward to, rather than dread, leftovers. Not ready to dive into it right away? Freeze the diced turkey until you are. And don't forget Daniela Galarza's Thanksgiving Soup, which offers suggestions for modifying it with roast turkey. For something that could be, but doesn't have to be, served at Thanksgiving, have a gander at the Stir-Fried Spiced Pumpkin that Joe Yonan shared from Romy Gill. Made with pumpkin (or other winter squash) and loads of spices, this dish would make a fantastic holiday side or vegetarian main. Or hang onto it for a quick and light post-holiday meal that can be on the table in 25 minutes. Need even more of an escape from the usual Turkey Day fare and chilly weather? Ellie Krieger to the rescue with her Skillet Chicken With Lemon, Fennel and Olives. This one-pan dinner will transport you to the sunny Mediterranean, with flavors and ingredients that channel Sicily and Morocco. To inspire you even more for the holiday, or beyond, I'm nominating a few additional dishes, below, for your table, based entirely on recommendations from readers like you. Here's to a peaceful, healthy holiday, filled with good food, yes, but also good company. |
